What Cypher Do You Use for Your BOS? (Magical Writing)

Postby Hamish » Sat May 16, 2015 9:08 pm

I've read up and found that this interesting custom? practice? Whatever it is to be called. Essentially writing in ones BoS in either a cypher writing system so a different alphabet for English OR a different language or a different alphabet and language.

Does anyone do this? What ones do people use?

Hamish, I know of people who do encrypt their BoS. The Theban alphabet is popular, as are Norse runes. However, I do want to make a note that readability in your BoS is important too! It's not a very functional tool if it's very difficult to read.

That is the main reason I stick to the two or three languages I can actually read and write.

I mean maybe an individual word or title heading might be calligraphic, but, Eh. I was just curious if anyone did that and what it meant to them spiritually.

Some of my "BoS" (I tend to just refer to them as journals, as I have more than one) is in code (made up language a friend of mine and I came up with over a decade ago), but very little. Just things that are extremely sensitive that no living person needs to know about.

Some of it is in Slovene and Glagolitic because the translation loses something of the intent. But that's because I follow a Slavic path and a lot of the information comes to me in those languages rather than English.

I have heard of people using Theban, Enochian, and other languages in their books (French, German, etc...) depending on their particular interest and bend. I'm not positive it's to keep others from deciphering it, because there are people who are able to read those alphabets fluently, but it may be for the general "atmosphere" (sorry, words aren't coming to my brain yet today) of their work.

I write some of my spells in Glagolitic alphabet too, as some of my work contains sigils that I found work best when written in it. I also use Protobulgarian runes and some Latin incantations, but other than that, I usually stick to Bulgarian and English in my BoS. It's like Vesca said - sometimes things get lost in the translation, so I try to keep the original work, not really chypher my work.

There is an idea in some occult streams that your native language is a mundane, everyday language, and any second language you learn will always be 'mystical' to you -- meaning you'll never fully understand it, and that it will have a more subconscious effect than a conscious effect. And in my understanding of things, Magick requires a certain subconscious connection in order to be efficient.

Some RPGs have their own alphabets and scripts which are not only beautiful but unique to use, one I enjoy using is from Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. It is called The Nazcaän Script, and it's read from right to left.

There are many wonderful scripts to use from games and books, even the script from The Lord of the Rings is wonderful, very difficult to get correct for me, so I stick to runes and the Nazcaän script. I love looking for new and old scripts, and there's so many to choose from.

My BoS tends to be mental and fluid. I dream in French and Spanish sometimes, but since I don't use either language on a regular basis, I wouldn't be able to write much of anything coherent. I plan to study Spanish when I get back to work on my BSN. It's a very prominent language in my area, so it would help me in the job market.
