I think magic is mostly psychological, in the way she had a cricket in your drink, it probably affected the part of the psychology that showed that someone giving you a drink (usually food sources are trustworthy dependable etc) and it had a cricket in it, showing something opposite of trustworthyness, so the contradictoryness is supposed to confuse or add fear perhaps, plus its odd and out of place for a cricket to be in a drink, so it stands out to the psych really, which could explain why you saw her in your dreams, since a cricket in a drink seems random enough for it to occur in a dream anyways.
And if magic and such does work, it being highly related to the mind, should mean that bad luck spells and such exist as sort of causing peoples natural magic to work in a more negative fashion, like if magic is naturally slightly used by our subconcious minds to help find oppurtunities, then it could have been used in the past to have us miss good oppurtunities, or seek out bad oppurtunities instead.
So, magic really heavily depends on the psychology, since people need to enter trances, do rituals (which have strong symbolism usually and can bring out emotions/feelings easier) and etc, so perhaps magical attraction works through the psychology, which is why depressed people seem to be more unlucky, though its argueable that their perception is to see things in an unlucky perspective, but then itd mean our subtle behaviors do provide consequence, perhaps attracting even a few random events from our subtle behaviors. Idk, it could have more to it than that.
